Constitution Day DVD and Lesson Plan

In celebration of Constitution Day, some 250 middle and high schools received free DVDs and lesson plans based on the fictional trial of The People v. Goldie Locks. Local students act out Ms. Goldie Locks’ arrest, questioning, and trial with Superior Court Judge Tam Nomoto Schumann presiding. The story highlights privileges guaranteed by the Bill of Rights, such as the right to an impartial jury, the right to have the assistance of counsel for defense, and the presumption of innocence.

The Superior Court of California, County of Orange collaborated with the Orange County Department of Education and the Orange County Bar Foundation to produce and distribute the educational package. As a result of Federal legislation passed in 2004, the California Education Code directs public schools to commemorate Constitution Day by providing “instruction in the purpose, meaning, and importance of the Constitution of the United States, including the Bill of Rights.” Constitution Day is celebrated annually on September 17.
