HIGHER EDUCATION MENTORING PROGRAM The Reunion: A gathering of Groovy Girls who are current, past & future HEM Participants

The Reunion
Hot fun in the summertime with an academic twist!
The Higher Education Mentoring Program held its first “Reunion” of current and past HEM participants. The Reunion’s goal was to bring together “girls with a goal to graduate from college” and to do something fun!
The Reunion, sponsored by the Junior League of Orange County, was held on Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at Huntington State Beach. The girls, a mix of high school juniors, seniors, college students and university graduates, got to know one another through several ice-breakers and games, over lots of food and just laying around the beach talking. Conversations centered on college campuses, majors, careers, dorm living and life after high school!
An Alumni Scholarship, in the amount of $250.00, was presented at The Reunion beach party to Nancy Gonzalez, an alumnus of HEM and 2nd year student at Orange Coast Community College. Nancy graduated from Santa Ana High School and the Higher Education Mentoring program in June 2006. She is majoring in Child and Adolescent Development and plans to become a teacher. Her goal is to complete her education at CSUF and return to the Santa Ana Unified School District. She completed her first year of college with a strong GPA while working nights to pay for her schooling. OCBF & Junior League Orange County are thrilled to be able to continue helping our alumni reach for academic success!
Higher Education Graduation
The OCBF HEM program celebrated its 6th annual Graduation on Wednesday, May 16, 2007. The Class of 2007 was honored for their 24-month commitment to the program. All eleven graduating seniors were accepted into 4-year University’s. The campuses our girls are attending include: Stanford, UCI UCR, CSUF, UCSB, UCSD, Cal Poly Pomona and USC. The ceremony honoring the participants was held at the lovely Bowers Museum courtyard, courtesy of the Hispanic Arts Council. Angie Rowe, a Sponsor Speaker and President of Junior League of Orange County, and Lilia Tanakayowma, Santa Ana Community College, highlighted the struggles as immigrants and being the first in their families to attend college. Ms. Rowe spoke of the importance of determination as the key to success and to always give back to your community.
THE HIGHER EDUCATION MENTORING PROGRAM is a unique program, which targets Santa Ana high school junior and senior Latinas who are interested in entering college, but need assistance due to cultural and gender barriers and limited financial resources. The program provides participants with a university student mentor, a Latina, who assists with college preparation activities and guidance towards the pursuit of higher education. Monthly workshops, campus tours, application and scholarship assistance and much more is made available! For more information please contact Susana Espinoza, Higher Education Mentoring Coordinator at (714) 480-1925 ext. 100 or via e-mail at sespinoza@ocbarfoundation.org.
